Welcome

Hello, I’m Yakaru and this post is about two and a half years late. It’s a scary thing, putting yourself out into the world. In 2014 I moved to a city I knew but had never lived in: Seattle. I made the decision during that move to be more open about who I am and less worried about being what I thought everyone wanted me to be. While not everything turned out how I expected, it was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life. With that in mind, I’d like to take the plunge again and put my thoughts and experiences out there, in hopes of entertaining, learning, teaching and exploring with the world at large.

Most people who know me probably learned of me through my profession — for over ten years I have been a professional video game developer, occupying the middle ground between the design department and engineering. At some companies this is called a Gameplay Engineer, at others it’s a Technical Designer. In that time I have worked on some amazing games with some amazing companies. I have been involved with names including Valve, Riot, and Epic Games. My work can be seen in games like League of Legends or Gears of War.

I am also involved in various parts of feminism and gender awareness; I am biologically intersex and self identify as an androgyne. Throughout my life I have, by friends, coworkers, and acquaintances, been thought of as male and female depending on context and how I am presenting. This has given me a unique perspective on the way that social behavior changes based on this perception.

Another area of interest is Economics. I take a multidox approach to the field, trying to look at problems from the perspective of various theories. Within that context I lean towards a free market approach, best tempered through social awareness and education.

Lastly, I’m a diagnosed double depressive. Struggling through this and learning to cope is an ongoing journey for me. Too often these mental concerns are treated as personal failures or sources of pity and I hope that anyone struggling with similar issues can take some inspiration from my successes and push through to their own.

Keep reading and you’ll find out more about all these topics and maybe a few other things as well. I look forward to the adventure yet to come.
